Internationals prove their worth in the WPT National Series

Within a week, DanskeSpil.dk and PMU.fr have staged their very first live tournaments with two WPT National Series events concluding 10,000 kilometres away from each other and a combined total prizepool of over €717,693.  There was 289 runners in Vejle in Denmark and 290 in Mauritius, which broke the record for the biggest field in a WPT National Series event and is now on record as the largest tournament ever held in the Indian Ocean. Strongly supported by their sponsors, both events have attracted great fields featuring a mixture of local players, online qualifiers and professionals. Local players were the dominant force in both tournaments but on both occasions it was an international who triumphed.

First to conclude was the €1,650 (12,200 DKK) WPT National Denmark Main Event, presented by DanskeSpil.dk, which ran from 28th February – 3rd March at Casino Munkebjerg, Vejle. Irish based US star Steven O’Dwyer overcome a Danish dominated final table that included double WSOP bracelet winner Jan Sorensen. O’Dwyer is a man on a heater and recently final tabled the EPT Copenhagen and was runner-up at WPT Venice. O’Dwyer scooped 893,960 DK (€120,244) for first, carving through a Danish dominated field that included Theo Jorgensen, Danske Spil pros Alexander “AlexKP” Petersen and Pernille Ravn, as well as Soren Kongsgaard and Jesper Hougaard.

O’Dwyer started the final table with just under half the chips in play and rarely looked troubled throughout the finale. Runner-up Martin Tønnesen, from Odense, snatched the chip lead briefly before the dinner break to heighten local hopes but soon afterwards O’Dwyer regained the initiative to move on to convincingly take down the title. Clearly on one of the hottest runs in world poker at the moment, O’Dwyer has been invited to the WPT special event: the PartyPoker.com Premier League Poker Play-Off and will take part in the elite televised format in Vienna in April.

“Denmark has been very kind to me and i am delighted to have won. I would like to thank Danske Spil, WPT and Casino Munkenjerg for hosting such a great tournament – sometimes it is worrying going to a place for the very first time, especially if they haven’t held a major tournament before but the set-up and treatment of the players was outstanding,” said O’Dwyer.
